I’m excited to share with you that we are finally done with our home renovation! Today, I’m sharing our before and after kitchen remodel and how we were able to achieve this luxurious look for less. As mentioned here previously, our outdated kitchen from the vinyl flooring to the plain cabinets was in dire need of some visual interest because there was no statement defined in the space. Replacing the backsplash tiles with Thassos marble tiles created an updated look. Rather than buying all-new cabinets, adding a fresh coat of paint (well, it’s actually 3 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint) and replacing the cabinet knobs breath new life into the existing cabinets which brighten the entire kitchen while saving money. Installing two cabinets beneath the upper glass cabinets weaves the kitchen together.
Appliances are the most expensive items (also worth the investment) to consider when remodeling your kitchen. Luckily for us we only needed to replace the cooktop. One of the burners stopped working months ago so it was time for a new one. The refrigerator was replaced over a year ago because it suddenly died and we needed a refrigerator. We wanted to replace the wall oven for this remodel but after reading not so great reviews about this particular model from Kitchenaid we decided to wait ’till it breaks. We also decided not to replace the dishwasher. As much as I LOVE Bosch dishwashers (the BEST EVER!) this dishwasher still works and we can hold off until later.
The wood flooring grounded the kitchen and offers contrasts with white that makes the galley kitchen look and feel spacious. We debated whether to install wood or tiles but then decided to go with wood to match the existing flooring. We also didn’t want to end up with 50 different floorings under 1 roof! Our biggest investment was the counter top. We wanted the marble look but the durability and low maintenance of granite. We found quartzite (it cannot etch with water or anything acidic) and it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread! I firmly believe that beautiful details and finishes are keys to an upscale kitchen, but they don’t have to cost a fortune to achieve that look not to mention adding the appreciation to your property.
We just finished unpacking and re-organizing the stuff for the 2 bathrooms and the dining room so stay tuned for upcoming posts regarding these transformations.

It’s hard to tell that it’s the same kitchen! It looks stunning!
Thank you, Bea!
So bright and pretty now! What a difference painting the cabinets white made! I love an all white kitchen. Yours is just gorgeous. Love the drawer pulls too.
Thank you, Annmarie!
I’d love to know if you repainted your cabinets yourself and if you didn’t, roughly how much it cost to do. Redoing our backsplash and painting our cabinets white is definitely on my list, but am worried about cost.
We were going I do it ourselves but it was too much work for us! We hired a professional and all they did was sanding the cabinets by hand and painted the cabinets w 3 coats of primer. I bought 2 gallons of Advance paint from Benjamin Moore for $69.99 per gallon and we were able to do 2 coats over the primer plus some more for the bathroom cabinet. It took 3 days to finish sanding and painting. Hope this helps and good luck w your remo!

Oh my goodness, I am in love with your kitchen. It makes me miss the kitchen we redid in our old house. Beautiful job. Smart choice with the quartzite. I miss my Bosch DW too! I love that you made such thoughtful choices every step of the way. Blessings to you & your sweet family,
