This week, we have a special guest post from Dr. Jeff Benabio sharing his skincare tips for your guy.  Dr. Jeff Benabio is a San Diego based dermatologist who has been featured on Esquire, Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, the Huffington Post, and much more.  Take it away Dr. Jeff Benabio!

Men love the summer. It’s that time of year when we get to do the things we’re good at like playing golf and grilling steaks. But we’re not so good at protecting ourselves when we’re having fun in the sun. We often need help from the ladies in our lives. Here’s how you can help your guy protect his skin.

When choosing sunscreen, look for a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 which blocks 97% of the sun’s rays. (No sunscreen blocks 100% of the sun’s rays.) You might think, well, if SPF 30 is good, then SPF 50 must be better. Not so. Studies have shown that higher numbers provide negligible added protection. So SPF 30 is the number you want. Make sure the sunscreen is labeled “broad-spectrum” which means it protects against both UVB and UVA rays, thereby protecting your guy from sunburns and skin cancer.

Once you’ve convinced him to apply sunscreen, the toughest sell is to get him to reapply it about every 2 hours. (Just one round of golf takes about 5 hours, so you do the math.)  I’d avoid guilt as a motivator and opt for something more light-hearted such as, “I really like having you around, honey. Who would take out the garbage every Wed?” Or, better yet, use your kids as a motivator: “I’d really like to get the kids to get in the habit of using sunscreen regularly, and I’d love it if you would apply it every day with them.” You get the idea.

As for skincare regimens, I always recommend Dove products to all my patients – the brand is known and trusted in dermatology communities for cleansing, moisturizing, and care.  For the guys, I tell them to use Dove Men+Care products, which are specifically formulated for men’s skin.  For the summer, I suggest men use the Dove Men+Care Hydrate+ Face Lotion. It not only offers advanced protection for dry skin, but it also contains a broad spectrum SPF 15. It’s fast absorbing, non-greasy, and has a light, fresh scent, unlike other products with high levels of perfume which can irritate skin.  Check out www.dovemencare.com for more information.
