Happy Chinese New Year! One can argue that culturally I’m more western than eastern, but my Chinese blood runs deep. Since last Friday, which was the beginning of Chinese New Year celebration, I’ve been busy celebrating with my family.
I celebrating Chinese New Year since I was a little girl because once a year, I get to wear a new outfit and collect red envelopes with money in them. I still love and hold true these traditions even though I no longer can collect red envelops because I’m married.
The Chinese New Year festivities are usually accompanied by a large array of customs and rituals from house and debt cleaning to what you should and should not wear because it symbolizes a new start and fresh hopes for the new year.
In terms of what to wear and what not to wear while celebrating Chinese New Year, we were taught early on to wear colorful clothing during this time of year, especially the color of red because it symbolizes prosperity. Colors to stay away from are black and white because they symbolize mourning and death and that would not be appropriate for such festive occasion. Actually, it is recommended not to wear any of these colors every day at all, which I completely disagree!
I love wearing the colors of black and white because artistically speaking, white is associated with light and purity while black is associated with mystery and elegance. And who doesn’t want to appear mysterious and power with a flicker of light!?
I personally feel that you can wear whatever you want as long as you feel good and confident wearing them. Traditions may dictate you to wear certain colors for certain celebrations but you don’t really have to follow them. Whenever I choose to wear black and/or white during Chinese New Year I always balance the outfit with a bright color to offset the negativity of these two colors.

Thank you, Patti!
I had no idea about the color traditions around Chinese New Year! However, I love your outfit and think it is fun and festive, even if it does include some black and white.
Thank you, Amiekay!
Happy New Year! I too am Chinese but am very Westernized so don’t believe in the traditions . My mom still believes but she understands it’s not my practice. I love the bright colors you are wearing and how you still recognize the traditions but like to wear what you’re comfortable in! Love your style!
