lunar new yearHappy Lunar New Year (aka Chinese New Year) Eve!  This is the year of the pig (Chinese Zodiac animal) where each lunar year is related to a zodiac animal.  There are 12 zodiac animals in total and they recur on a 12-year cycle. If you are born in 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 or  2019, then your Chinese Zodiac animal is the pig and this animal’s trait is known to be very compassionate, generous, and diligent.

Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together and the New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important meal of the year.  And on New Year’s day, we usually wear red or other brightly-colored clothes from head to toe because it symbolizes a new start and fresh hopes for the new year.  And there are certain colors that we tend to stay away from.  I have been celebrating this family tradition since birth.

You can find anything and everything in red during Lunar New Year celebration.  In our culture, red is a lucky color and during this celebration, a red envelope with money inside is given to children and the elderly.  The red color envelope symbolizes good fortune and to suppress or ward off demons.  As a married woman with kids, it is customary for me to give out red envelopes during this time of year for good luck.  Each year I look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion with my friends and family.
