This is our boys’ first pumpkin patch and also my first!  No, we didn’t take them to the pumpkin patch when they were a few months old.  We were traveling at the time and weren’t in the states!  We didn’t take them when they were over 1 yr. old either.  We tried but it was too cold and the boys refused to step out of the car once we got there.

Newly immigrated to the US a few decades ago, my parents had no clue what a pumpkin patch was let alone Halloween.  Our ways of blending in with the western culture during Halloween was to purchase a couple pumpkins from the supermarket, carelessly carved them, and placed them on the doorsteps awaiting for Trick or Treaters.  Supermarket was our pumpkin patch that we knew of!  I would later learned about pumpkin patches and almost visited a few in my neighborhood.  Never once did I feel the desire to go in and check it out.  I never understood why visiting a pumpkin patch would be necessary since you can get the same pumpkins from the supermarket.

Recently, we decided to bring the boys to this pumpkin patch place that was a few blocks from our home.  They’ve been talking up the storm about pumpkins and snowman (they’ve been calling the white ghost decoration sitting on the neighbor’s yard “snowman”. ok.)  The night was a perfect fall night with cool temperature.  The boys squealed “pumpkins” when they saw these lovely pumpkins meticulously lay out on the ground.  There was also a petting zoo that the boys got to enjoy after.  I came to the realization that it was not the money but the priceless moments that you get from the experience.  How awesome and joyful it is to be able to see your kids’ smiley faces when they’re in contact with pumpkins and trying to redesign the patch.  The pumpkin patch is definitely a family tradition for us to visit wherever we may live.
